Back-to-School Tips for Parents to Follow

Friday, August 19, 2016

This may come as a shock, but school will be back in session in just a matter of days. As summer comes to an end, your child may find it difficult to get back into a routine without some preparation first. This is where parents come into play. Parents are a large support system in a child’s academic career and success, which is why we’ve made a back-to-school to-do list for you! Follow these tips so your child can be prepared and well-rested for their first day of class.

Resume bedtime schedule.

During summer vacation, bedtimes aren’t always enforced. Summer is when families stay up later than normal to watch fireworks, roast marshmallows in a fire pit, and view evening movies in the park. Rest is extremely important for a productive and healthy school year. Start reinforcing a sleep schedule so the morning alarm doesn’t come as a total shock on the first day.

Communicate with new teacher.

Don’t wait until the school open house to have the first conversation with the teacher. Most teachers will send out an email welcome letter prior, detailing what is expected in the classroom, a school supply list and teacher contact information. Introduce yourself and child via email once the letter comes to your inbox. He or she will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Let the educator know in the email if you want to be considered for a parent volunteer position or have plans on joining the PTA.

Make healthy meals.

An empty stomach leaves most of us feeling blah, which makes it incredibly difficult to concentrate on work. A child could also have a hard time staying focused without an adequate breakfast. Good nutrition helps enhance academic performance by keeping your kid alert and focused on their studies.

We understand it can be a challenge to prepare breakfast at home when you’re trying to shuffle everyone out the door. But, think of it as a way to help your kid succeed at school! If time really is a struggle in the morning, prepare a healthy breakfast and sack lunch the night before.

Make an appointment for a checkup or physical at the doctor’s office.

Just as a precautionary measure, make an appointment with your child’s pediatrician for a routine checkup or physical prior to the first day of school. Most schools require up-to-date immunization records for all students – do this now so you’re not scrambling to come up with these documents during the first week of school. Is your kid planning on joining a sports team or school organization? They’ll probably need a physical on file before attending tryouts. Be sure to schedule an eye or dentist appointment, too.

Set up a quiet homework space in the apartment.

At home in the apartment, set up a quiet, distraction-free spot where your child can do his or her school work in. Be sure it’s free of anything, like a TV or game console, that could disrupt their learning. Make it known that homework is top-priority, and playtime comes only after all school work is complete.
